W
hile a Baptist presence had been in the area as early as 1794, it was not until Elder A. L. Post in 1841 spent some time in Tunkhannock preaching and seeing evidence of God’s work among the people including the midnight baptism of George Ross on September 13, 1841 in the Tunkhannock Creek. In the course of a month, 18 were baptized. God was doing a great work through Elder Post as he traveled through the area preaching the Gospel. Soon after this, those who were saved and baptized sought out to make a formal compact with each other to “carry out the more perfectly the will of the Master.”
On November 3, 1841, ministers and messengers convened from different churches and organized a council to recognize the group of believers as a local church. On the basis of their statement of faith and church covenant, the council voted to “fellowship them as a church of Christ.” Thus with a group originally of 29 members, Tunkhannock Baptist Church was formed. They moved into the current building in 1883 at the Corners of Bridge and Church Streets (featured as the representative Baptist congregation on the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission website).
Tunkhannock Baptist Church exists to make and mature disciples who are becoming like the Lord Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father!
This occurs through five avenues
- The teaching of God’s Word.
- The worldwide proclamation of God’s saving grace expressed in the shed blood and finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.
- The promotion of Godly worship.
- The defense of “the faith once delivered.”
- The cooperation with Christian activity functioning in harmony with God’s Holy Word.
